How to use the Live Caption feature on Pixel phones

Google introduced Live Caption for the first time in 2019 with the launch of the Pixel 4 phones, a feature that can annotate any audio that comes out of your phone, whether it's an audio clip, a video, a phone call, or a voice message. This feature relies on artificial intelligence and can automatically recognize speech and transcribe it into text.

What devices support the Live Caption feature?

This feature is exclusive to Pixel phones and works on the Pixel 2 or any newer model, but it has started to be added to other non-Google devices, such as some newer Samsung and OnePlus phones.

In the Pixel 6 series and newer devices, as well as some other modern Android phones, the Live Caption feature supports several languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. However, for older Pixel models, this feature only supports the English language.

Furthermore, the Pixel 6 phone and newer phones have the option of responding using text via Live Caption, where you can type a response while on a call and your phone will read your response to the person you are speaking with.

How to turn on Live Caption in Google Pixel phones

To turn on Live Caption in Pixel phones, open the Settings app, then follow these steps:

»Click on the Sound & vibration option, then choose Live Caption.

»Turn on Use Live Caption.

You can also activate this feature by clicking the Volume Up or Volume Down button, and then clicking the Live Caption icon that will appear on the screen at the bottom of the volume indicator.

Afterwards, you can play any audio or video clip or make a voice or video call, and your phone's screen will display a box containing captions of what is being said in the audio clip. You can long-press the caption box to drag it up or down and place it in the desired location, and you can also zoom in by double-tapping on it.

Here's how to adjust the Live Caption feature settings:

You can adjust the settings for the Live Caption feature by following these steps:

1-Open the Settings app on your Google Pixel phone.

2-Go to Sound & vibration and then click on the Live Caption option.

3-Several options will appear on the screen, including: 

• The "Hide profanity" option: you can enable it to prevent profanity from being displayed when copying the text of a call, audio clip, or video clip.
• The "Live Caption in volume control" option: you can disable it to prevent the Live Caption feature from being activated using the volume control buttons.

Typing responses using Live Caption feature:

People who use a Pixel 6 or any newer model phone can use the Live Caption feature to type text responses during calls after activating the "Type responses during calls" option by following these steps:

• Open the "Settings" app on your phone, then go to "Sound & vibration."
• Click on "Live Caption" and then enable the "Type responses during calls" option.

After activating it and starting to use the Live Caption feature during the call, the keyboard icon will appear, click on it and then start typing a reply and Liva Caption will read what you wrote to the person you are talking to.
