Crawling

Crawling occurs when a search engine requests web pages from website servers and search engine machines or robots visit the web pages in a manner similar to how you would. It collects a copy of that page and notes all the links on that page every time.
Then it visits the next link in the list of not yet visited links. The data-collecting programs used by search engines are called "spiders," "bots," or "crawlers," such as Googlebot, Bingbot, GoogleAdsBot, and AdIdxBot.

Rendering

When a search engine crawls a web page, it will then "call" the page. This involves taking in HTML, JavaScript, and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) information so that the search engine can understand how to display the content of a web page while ensuring that they have all the content that a human user might see when visiting the page. It is considered a sub-process within the crawl phase. 

Google uses the same rendering engine as the Google Chrome browser, called "Rendertron" and built through the open source Chromium browser platform. And some search engines may store a shortened version of web pages in terms of visible text only, stripped of all formatting.

Indexing

Once the page is crawled and rendered, search engines process the page further to determine whether or not to be stored in the index, and understand the content of the page. A search engine index is functionally similar to a word index at the end of a book that lists several keywords and keyword sequences associated with a list of all web pages where the keywords are located.
And the major search engines have now been using something more complex for a few generations to achieve the purpose of searching for a keyword and returning all URLs related to the word.

Ranking

Once a search engine has a list of all web pages associated with a particular keyword or keyword phrase, it must then decide how to rank those pages when performing a keyword search. The so-called "algorithm" is very complex.
